tips for renting in Croydon

Let’s face it, buying a house or flat in Croydon London isn’t always convenient or affordable.

With that in mind, if you’re looking to move into the Croydon area without making the commitment to buy a property, renting is always a good option to consider.
In this blog post we’re going to look at a few top tips for potential tenants to consider when hunting for a place to rent:
  • Find out if the property comes furnished: Sometimes letting agents will show you around a property when the old tenant is still living there. You’ll see the property full of furniture – then when moving day comes, you’ll open the door to find everything is gone. Different landlords have different policies, some let their properties fully furnished – others let theirs unfurnished. It’s up to you to ask the letting agent whether or not furniture is included in the rental price. It’s not the end of the world if the property isn’t furnished, but remember that beds, sofas and wardrobes don’t come cheap, so you should budget accordingly for them.
  • Setup a standing order: If you’re forgetful, it makes sense to setup a standing order for your monthly rent payments. As soon as you start to miss payments, landlords will start to become suspicious and alarm bells will start ringing. Setup a standing order to coincide with the due date of your rent payment each month and you’ll never have to worry about it again!
  • Read the tenancy agreement thoroughly: The vast majority of tenancy agreements are fair for all concerned – but before signing on the dotted line, trawl through the small print just to ensure everything is in order.
  • Find out what you’re insured for: It’s a common misconception that landlords insure tenants. The fact is that they insure the building itself, but not tenants or their property. Be sure to take out the appropriate cover when you move in.
